West Virginia's water

Where our rivers and drinking water stand right now. Pick a measure — each dot is colored by that site's most recent sample, not an average. USGS stream gauges update continuously; Water Quality Portal lab samples (metals, bacteria, sulfate…) are periodic, so each marker carries its own sample date. New to this? 🚰 Drinking-water systems & violations

This is the crisis behind the headlines — WV has the nation's worst rate of health-based drinking-water violations, concentrated in the southern coalfields. Every public water system and whether it has a Safe Drinking Water Act violation, from EPA ECHO / SDWIS. Bubbles are sized by the number of systems in violation per county (placed at the county center).

Sources: USGS NWIS real-time gauges (flow, gage height, and some pH / oxygen / conductivity / turbidity) and the Water Quality Portal (EPA/USGS lab & grab samples — E. coli, metals like iron/aluminum/manganese, sulfate, nitrate, TDS — across hundreds of sites). Portal samples are periodic, not live, so each marker shows its latest-sample date. All data is provisional; thresholds shown are general aquatic-life / secondary standards, not a drinking-water determination.
